KAMLOOPS — If you named your child either Benjamin or Olivia this year, you’re not alone.
The Vital Statistics Agency says the top baby name in 2017 so far for boys is Benjamin, and for girls, Olivia.
Liam and Logan are nearly as popular and only a few places behind in the current rankings.
If Benjamin can keep its lead, 2017 will be the first year it is the top boys’ name. Logan and James tops out the top five for boys. In 2016, Lucas was the top boys’ name.
Olivia is a good bet to continue its reign as top girls’ name with a good lead over Emma, which is in second place. For the past six years, Olivia and Emma have been the tops girls’ names. Sophia, Charlotte and Ava round out the girls’ top five.
Preliminary stats for names are from Jan. 1 to Dec. 15, 2017. Final numbers won’t be known until some time next year.
There were 45,399 babies born in B.C in 2016 — 22,188 girls and 23,210 boys.
