Looking for local baby name inspiration? Here are SA’s most popular baby names

If you’re not a fan of the latest celebrity baby name trends, a traditional South African baby name might be exactly what you’re after. The name you choose for your baby is one of the things that will shape the rest of his or her life. Research shows a name can influence your child’s self-esteem and even his or her  love life later on.

While tradition in most African cultures is to name the baby after his or her grandparents or great-grandparents, some parents don’t go this route and simply choose a name they like with input from the grandparents. “I chose a name that meant something special to me. My daughter’s name is Reneilwe, meaning ‘we are given’,” says mommy Licia Selepe.

“We had a few baby name options, but couldn’t decide. My husband and I then prayed about our baby name choice and read a scripture, and that’s how God gave us the name Israel for our first-born son,” says mommy Tintswalo Nsibande.
